This may just be the best iPhone app ever! For anyone who has been stuck in a conversation with someone who passionately says something about climate change that is utterly uninformed, you'll know how nice it is to not only be able to talk about the science that proves them wrong, but now you can actually show them research on it right there in the middle of the moment. Read the rest of this article from Treehugger.com In light of the Prime Minister's invitation for input on the upcoming federal budget, the Green Budget Coalition (GBC) is highlighting its three priority budget recommendations, whose adoption could stimulate over 8,000 new jobs in renewable energy, ensure clean sources of drinking water for millions of Canadians, and help Canada meet its commitment under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity to establish national and regional systems of protected areas. "These are prime opportunities for Canada to shine on the world stage during the International Year of Biodiversity and in the lead-up to the G8 and G20 Summits," said Barry Turner, Chair of the Green Budget Coalition and Director of Government Relations, Ducks Unlimited Canada. more Arctic Voices Fellowship Program The Arctic Voices Fellowship program is up and running and needs your help in identifying Northern applicants. Member Profile Meet Living Oceans Society Living Oceans Society is Canada’s largest organization focusing exclusively on marine conservation issues. We believe that people are part of the environment and that by protecting the B.C. coastal ecosystem, we can build sustainable communities today and for our children. The ocean is often overlooked in the climate change debate even though it is being greatly affected by increased carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Through our Energy and Marine Protected Area Programs we are helping protect the ocean from climate change impacts. We are developing an additional program to raise awareness about the impacts of ocean acidification and the need for Canada and the rest of the world to develop fair, ambitious and binding climate policies. Take Action: Through our Marine Protected Areas (MPA) program we are working to preserve the remaining sea grass beds and salt marshes on Canada’s coastlines. These sensitive areas have significant carbon sequestering potential. Protecting them in a series of MPAs will help battle climate change and ensure greater resiliency in our ocean ecosystems. To join our call to protect these vital areas click here: www.livingoceans.org/programs/mpa/action.aspx Over the past decade our Energy Program has successfully kept B.C.’s coast free from offshore oil and gas development. We intend to replicate that success by also keeping the north coast free from massive oil tankers. A proposed mega-project by Enbridge called “Northern Gateway” plans to build dual pipelines running between the tar sands and coastal B.C. If approved, over 200 tankers per year will travel through the waters surrounding the Great Bear Rainforest. The tar sands expansion related to this project would produce an additional 6.5 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, equivalent to putting 1.6 million cars on the road.
