Canada's Climate Change Calendar! Canada is one of the top ten emitters in the world no matter how you look at it; per capita, in absolute terms, and historically. Canada’s Climate Change Calendar shows just how Canadian's emissions measure up to the rest of the world. The results are quite shocking. By the end of January, the average Canadian will have polluted more than the annual per capita emissions of 44 other countries, including industrial powerhouse India. Join us Saturday morning (June 26th) at 11:30 am at the Greenpeace Office in Toronto (33 Cecil street). We have green hardhats, banners, and a bunch of other gear to make the climate block front and centre at the march. We will head together to the main march at 12:30. Responding to the Government's climate change annoucements
Climate Action Network Canada responds to the government's announcement to commit 400 million to fast track climate change finance as well as an announcement on the future of coal plants in Canada.
The government has taken a step in the right direction with the announcement of 400 million dollars this fiscal year to support action on climate change in developing countries, but we need to make sure that they are not getting this money by raiding the aid budget. Where is this money is coming from and where it is going? It needs to be above and beyond money already promised for Official Development Assistance and it must be channeled through appropriate agencies decided upon through the United Nations framework. We also look forward to further commitments to extend this money beyond this fiscal year. When it comes to regulations, this government has been making a series of empty promises for over three years, meanwhile coal plants continue to be built and emissions continue to rise. It appears that these new proposed regulations are actually a step back from unmet promises made three years ago. We need a coal free Canada. This means phasing out existing coal plants, prohibiting the construction of new plants and instead making meaningful investments in renewable energy and energy conservation.
