Climate Action Network Canada Reaction to Bill C-311
and Liberal Motion
April 14, 2010
In
response to the passing of Bill C-311, the Climate Change
Accountability Act, to third reading as well as the tabling of the
Liberal
climate change motion, Graham Saul, Executive Director of the Climate
Action
Network Canada said the following;
'After years of struggling to get
the Climate
Change Accountability Act through
parliament, it is
great to see that we are now moving towards a third reading of
the Bill
with the support of all of the opposition parties. The passing of this
Bill,
which includes mid and long term targets in line with what science tells
us is necessary to avoid
run-away climate change, represents one of the biggest steps forward in
Canadian climate
policy in
years.
Last month the Government
released a budget that leaves
Canada falling behind other countries in creating clean energy jobs, and
last
week they closed the door on funding for the popular home energy
retrofits
program. It is reassuring to see that the majority of members of
parliament
stand with the majority of Canadians and leading provinces in demanding
action
on climate change. The majority support for this Bill shows how out of
touch the
Harper government is
with what Canadians and Parliamentarians want. It
is our hope that the government will finally start listening and start
moving
Canada in a direction in line with predominant Canadian values.
The tabling of
today's Liberal motion is also a very positive step in
the right
direction towards ensuring Canada moves away from its reputation as a
global
climate change laggard. We hope that both of these significant items
manifest
themselves in policy and meaningful action over the short term and we
look
forward to supporting the implementation of ambitious climate change
policy in
Canada."
