For release March 1, 2010 Sierra Youth Coalition
Ontario Campuses Participate in International Teach-in for Climate Justice Today, hundreds of students at campuses across Ontario, with the support of the Sierra Youth Coalition will launch a Teach-in For Climate Justice. Using an alternative style of educational forum faculty at participating campuses will dedicate a portion of their classes to engage in a discussion around climate change and climate justice in a momentous event engaging thousands of students over the next two weeks.
The Teach-in, was revived from the 1960’s 2 years ago by the youth led goBeyond project in British Columbia. Last year, students engaged approximately 20, 000 students in a discussion around education and climate change. This year, Sierra Youth Coalition, along with organizations and schools from South Africa, Kenya, and Malaysia are jumping on board to orchestrate the first ever International Teach-in on Climate Justice.
Climate justice examines how certain communities and countries are disproportionately affected by the environmental degradation caused by climate change, and how often these communities have contributed the least to cause this destruction.
“Discussions around climate change and justice is the first step towards strengthening public consensus on the issue, and allows everyday people to begin considering solutions.” says Nicole Unis, fourth year student at the University of Windsor, studying communications.
“As historic drivers of innovation and forward thinking, postsecondary institutions and the communities within have a responsibility to educate and build solutions around the issues facing our world today” says Carly Joynt, Regional Coordinator of the Ontario branch of Sierra Youth Coalition. During the Teach-in for Climate Justice students will couple the in school lecture component with creative awareness raising campaigns using diverse tactics to reach out to as many students as possible. The Sierra Youth Coalition is an organization run by youth for youth, serving as the youth arm of the Sierra Club of Canada. Its mission is to empower young people to become active community leaders who contribute to making Canada a better society. http://www.syc-cjs.org/ -30- For more information, or to host your own event during the Teach-in for Climate Justice please contact: Carly Joynt SYC Regional Coordinator 289-314-6756 Ontario@syc-cjs.org
